Keynote speakers

Keynote speaker

Prof. Dr. Sara de Freitas

Thought leader in the field of game-based learning and recognized as one of the most Influential Women in Technology. An educator, author, researcher and public speaker with twenty-five years in education
Topic:

Game Over for Education as we know it?

This presentation will provide an overview of the six main trends in education and how they have been responsible for the Quiet Education Revolution that has been happening over the last fifty years. The revolution has led to significant changes in formal education, including a sectoral move to blended learning. While no significant difference was found between online only and face-to-face provision, significant improvements for learners can be seen when comparing online or face-to-face modes only. In my own research, we found significant improvements in game-based learning as well. With a focus upon student engagement and the LEAR model, this presentation will take teachers and educators through a journey from traditional to future learning providing tips on a shift in learning design from curriculum to learning experiences. As we seek to engage our Generation Z learners who have grown up with mobile phones for learning and are used to be engaged through games and interactive digital content. Game based curriculum and approaches will become more dominant not just to support the design of learning but also for the delivery of learning. What will this mean to the future of learning and the role of the teacher and lecturer? Our discussion will enthuse and excite our audience to try more games in their practice.

Keynote speaker

Prof. Dr. Ivo Wenzler

Professor Serious Gaming at the NHL Stenden University of Applied Sciences
Topic:

What is serious gaming and why should we bother?

The reality as we experience it is often complex, ill-defined, and dynamic in nature. The changes within that reality, whether ecological, social, or technological, are rapid and discontinuous. So, if you want to understand what the future might or should be like, learn how to influence it or adapt to it, and build your confidence in achieving that future, what do you do? You play.

Serious gaming as a process of play and serious games as instruments of play, are in effect simulations of our perceptions of reality, providing experiential environments for learning and enabling change.

The presentation will focus on three key questions: what serious gaming is, why should we care about it, and what are the key areas for future research if we want to increase the societal impact of serious gaming.

Dr. Eveline van Zeeland

Expert coach of organizations, professionals and students on how to apply design thinking in their everyday practice. University teacher for almost twenty years.
Topic:

Creativity is intelligence having fun - Innovative learning in 2030

Creativity is intelligence having fun” is one of the most inspiring quotes by Albert Einstein. During this keynote, we will explore the intersection of these words ‘creativity’, ‘intelligence’ and ‘fun’. Right at the core of this intersection lies the attitude of curiosity, of imagination and of experimentation which is so relevant when one tries to tackle our society’s challenges. This same attitude lies at the core of game-based learning, but also forms the foundation of the work of great scientists and designers as Einstein, Leonardo da Vinci and Gaudí. We will jump back and forth between historical figures as da Vinci and the future of higher education. What can we learn from these historical superheroes with respect to game-based learning? How can we apply their way of working in modern innovative education focussing on solving problems? Which transition will higher education make the coming decade and what is the (changing) role of the teacher in all this? How can the teacher safeguard his human touch in an era of tech-based education? During this keynote, Dr. Eveline van Zeeland will share her insights on these questions.
