Since 2012, Hochschule Munich has been using Inchainge business simulations to provide students with a realistic, integrated understanding of Supply Chain and Value Chain Management. Over time, the program expanded from end-to-end supply chain fundamentals with The Fresh Connection to circularity with The Blue Connection and ESG-driven decision-making with The Triple Connection — helping learners connect strategy to operational choices and long-term value creation. The approach was continuously developed in collaboration with Andrea Walbert (PMI Production Management Institute GmbH) and Prof. Dr. André Krischke, with the learning concept being constantly adapted to new academic, economic, and societal requirements.

Seit 2012 setzt die Hochschule München die Business-Simulationen von Inchainge ein, um Studierenden ein realistisches, integriertes Verständnis des Supply-Chain- und Value-Chain-Managements zu vermitteln. Im Laufe der Zeit wurde das Programm von den End-to-End-Grundlagen der Lieferkette mit The Fresh Connection über Kreislaufwirtschaft mit The Blue Connection bis hin zu ESG-orientierter Entscheidungsfindung mit The Triple Connection erweitert. Es hilft Lernenden dabei, Unternehmensstrategie und Supply Chain Strategie mit operativen Entscheidungen und langfristiger Wertschöpfung zu verbinden. Der Ansatz wurde kontinuierlich gemeinsam mit Andrea Walbert (PMI Production Management Institute GmbH) und Prof. Dr. André Krischke weiterentwickelt, wobei das Lernkonzept fortlaufend an neue akademische, wirtschaftliche und gesellschaftliche Anforderungen angepasst wurde.

Since 2012, Hochschule Munich has been using Inchainge business simulations to provide students with a realistic, integrated understanding of Supply Chain and Value Chain Management. In close cooperation with Andrea Walbert, Managing Director of PMI Production Management Institute GmbH, and Prof. Andre Krischke, the simulation-based learning approach has continuously evolved in line with changing academic, business and societal requirements.

Building integrated Supply Chain decision-making skills with The Fresh Connection (2012–2017)

Between 2012 and 2017, The Fresh Connection was embedded as a core learning element within the Supply Chain Management focus. More than 250 bachelor students participated, working in cross-functional teams over up to nine decision rounds with increasing complexity.

Program redesign and strategic refocus (2018–2020)

Following a comprehensive redesign of the study program, the simulation-based approach was temporarily paused to prepare new content with a stronger focus on sustainability and long-term value creation.

Circular Supply Chains and sustainability with The Blue Connection (from 2021)

From 2021 onwards, the collaboration resumed with a clear emphasis on circular economy and sustainable Supply Chains. Approximately 70 students worked intensively on a circular business case, transforming a company from a linear to a circular value chain. The simulation was complemented by in-depth module papers.

ESG and Value Chain Management with Triple Connection (2023)

In 2023, the simulation portfolio was expanded with Triple Connection, focusing on ESG-driven decision-making and holistic Value Chain Management. Students learned how environmental, social and governance objectives influence performance, risk and long-term competitiveness.

The collaboration between Hochschule Munich, PMI and Inchainge, which has grown over more than a decade, demonstrates how simulation-based learning can continuously evolve. From classic end-to-end Supply Chain Management to circular economy and ESG-driven Value Chain Management, students develop practical, decision-oriented capabilities that prepare them for leadership roles in increasingly complex and sustainability-driven business environments.

Seit 2012 setzt die Hochschule München Business Simulationen von Inchainge ein, um Studierenden ein realitätsnahes, integriertes Verständnis von Supply Chain und Value Chain Management zu vermitteln. In enger Zusammenarbeit mit Andrea Walbert, Geschäftsführerin der PMI Production Management Institute GmbH, sowie Prof. Andre Krischke wurde der simulationsbasierte Lernansatz über die Jahre kontinuierlich weiterentwickelt — stets angepasst an neue fachliche, wirtschaftliche und gesellschaftliche Anforderungen.

Aufbau integrierter Supply-Chain-Entscheidungskompetenz mit The Fresh Connection (2012–2017)

Zwischen 2012 und 2017 wurde The Fresh Connection als zentrales Lernelement im Schwerpunkt Supply Chain Management eingesetzt. Mehr als 250 Bachelorstudierende arbeiteten in funktionsübergreifenden Teams über bis zu neun Spielrunden mit steigender Komplexität.

Neugestaltung des Studiengangs (2018–2020)

Im Zuge einer umfassenden Neugestaltung des Studiengangs wurde der simulationsbasierte Ansatz vorübergehend pausiert, um neue inhaltliche Schwerpunkte — insbesondere Nachhaltigkeit und langfristige Wertschöpfung — vorzubereiten.

Kreislaufwirtschaft und nachhaltige Supply Chains mit The Blue Connection (ab 2021)

Ab 2021 wurde die Zusammenarbeit mit einem klaren Fokus auf Kreislaufwirtschaft und nachhaltige Supply Chains fortgesetzt. Rund 70 Studierende bearbeiteten intensiv einen Circular-Business-Case und transformierten ein Unternehmen von einer linearen zu einer zirkulären Wertschöpfungskette. Die Simulation wurde durch fundierte Modularbeiten ergänzt.

ESG und Value Chain Management mit Triple Connection (2023)

2023 wurde der Fokus mit Triple Connection gezielt auf ESG und ganzheitliches Value Chain Management erweitert. Studierende lernten, ökologische, soziale und Governance-Ziele systematisch in strategische Entscheidungen zu integrieren.

Seit 2024 wird The Blue Connection als gezieltes Ergänzungsformat zur Lehre eingesetzt, um ausgewählte Inhalte zu vertiefen und Entscheidungszusammenhänge praxisnah erfahrbar zu machen.

Andrea Walbert is Managing Partner of PMI Production Management Institute GmbH in Planegg, Germany. PMI has supported organizations for over 30 years with internationally recognized training and certification programs in Supply Chain Management, working with a global network of renowned partners.

With more than 25 years of international experience, Andrea Walbert is a recognized expert in Supply Chain Management and transformation. As a lecturer at Munich University of Applied Sciences, she combines strategic vision with strong practical relevance, bringing complex concepts to life through simulation-based learning.

Professor Dr. André Krischke

Professor Dr. André Krischke has been a professor of logistics and supply chain management at the Munich University of Applied Sciences since 2007. After studying general mechanical engineering at the Technical University of Munich and economics at the Open University of Hagen, he worked as a consultant at McKinsey & Company, Inc., focusing on logistics, product development, and procurement.

Prof. Krischke was also responsible for a business unit at Osram as a supply chain manager. His current teaching and research focuses are Supply Chain Design, Supply Chain Risk Management, and Behavioral Operations Management.

Andrea Walbert

Andrea Walbert ist Managing Partner der PMI Production Management Institute GmbH in Planegg bei München. PMI begleitet seit über 30 Jahren Unternehmen mit international anerkannten Weiterbildungs- und Zertifizierungsprogrammen im Supply Chain Management und arbeitet mit einem globalen Netzwerk renommierter Partner zusammen.

Mit über 25 Jahren internationaler Erfahrung ist Andrea Walbert eine anerkannte Expertin für Supply Chain Management und Transformation. Als Lehrbeauftragte an der Hochschule München verbindet sie strategische Perspektive mit hoher Praxisnähe und macht komplexe Zusammenhänge durch simulationsbasiertes Lernen erlebbar.

Professor Dr. André Krischke

Professor Dr. Andre Krischke ist seit 2007 Professor für Logistik- und Supply Chain Management an der Hochschule München. Nach seinem Studium Allgemeines Maschinenwesen an der Technischen Hochschule München und seinem Studium der Wirtschaftswissenschaften an der Fernuniversität Hagen war er als Unternehmensberater bei McKinsey & Company, Inc. mit den Schwerpunkten Logistik, Produktentwicklung und Einkauf tätig.

Zudem war Prof. Krischke bei Osram als Supply Chain Manager verantwortlich für eine Business Unit. Aktuelle Lehr- und Forschungsschwerpunkte sind derzeit Supply Chain Design, Supply Chain Risk Management und Behavioral Operations Management.

Empowering Students with Real-World Experience

Stephan Verhasselt is a lecturer at FHNW University of Applied Sciences in Switzerland, where he has been teaching for over 10 years. With a background in mechanical engineering and a PhD in supply chain management, Stephan brings a wealth of industry experience to his classes.
